Online class in composition and production of film music

Our online class in composition and production for film music is designed to provide comprehensive training in all key areas of film scoring within a virtual classroom environment. We offer specialised workshops for each subject area in small groups of no more than four students per class, creating the ideal balance between interactive learning and individual support. Our online class for film music composition gives students the opportunity to study in the familiarity of their own workspace at home while still collaborating with other musicians and developing their skills together.

In our online class, aspiring composers learn all essential composition techniques and gain solid knowledge of the production process. The programme offers in-depth insight into four main areas: music theory and composition studies, composition for film, games and media, acoustics and applied audio engineering, and finally a practical project in scoring.

To cover a broad range of compositional techniques, students learn the fundamentals of music theory, including harmony, tonal composition, ear training and rhythm. Functional harmony, scale theory and related topics provide the foundation for understanding the complex language of harmony in depth. Students also develop skills in tonal composition, including chorale writing and orchestration. Ear training for intervals and chord progressions, as well as rhythm training covering topics such as polyrhythms and the characteristic use of brass, woodwind and percussion instruments, completes this first part of the online class.

We also teach the core concepts of composition for film, games and media. In this part of the online class, composers explore different types of scores, as well as dramaturgy and emotion in audiovisual music. They learn to distinguish between the musical language of genres such as horror, action, nature documentaries and animated films. Before beginning their own practical work, participants analyse selected examples in detail.

A strong composer also needs a solid understanding of acoustics and applied audio engineering. For this reason, these subjects form another important part of our online class for film music composition. Students learn how room acoustics and natural sonic effects influence a production and how to use these characteristics effectively when recording a score. They also explore the creative use of digital effects and learn how to work professionally with their DAW to produce distinctive and expressive music for visual media.

Practical experience is an essential part of our online class for film music composition. By creating their own composition at the end of their studies, students are prepared to write compelling music for film, games and media. After successfully completing the course, they will be able to realise their own compositions and productions independently.
